about

The songs on this record represent a very specific time, place, feeling, and group of people. Most of them were written somewhere between 2009 and 2016 when I was living in Austin, TX. In that time, I was lucky enough to convince a handful of talented folks to get together and bring these songs to life. With Arron Casper (lead guitars), Mateo Mares (Bass), Catherine Naiser (backing/lead vocals), and Andrew Stevens (Drums), these songs got to live for many nights in many a venue around the city and it was a whole lotta goddamn fun.

I've gone back and forth on whether I wanted to record these songs or not. There had actually been an attempt to do it back in 2012 to get them on tape but I didn't have it in me to finish at that point. It took me moving back to Maine to realize that if I were to record these songs, they just wouldn't be done justice by any other ensemble. So, after not playing for a year and a half, I flew down to Texas to record with them. And they nailed it.

It only took me another two years of dragging my feet to record the rest of the record. The majority of which was done during the quarantine at the beginning of this year. It was also because of the pandemic (and a whole lot of me procrastinating) that I missed my opportunity to capture Catherine's vocals in the recordings. It was a hard choice to make. Fortunately, my partner, Geneviève, had been singing these songs with me for the past few years up here in Maine and, luckily, was willing to fill the void that was left in the songs. I don't think anyone else would have been able to do that.

I'm not going to lie to you, these songs have been a burden. They have been weighing me down for way too long. It took years of friends (I'm looking at you, Jesse Wooten) poking and prodding, but I now lay them down here to set afire with all of their imperfections and faults. I'm glad to not have to carry that weight.

And with this release marks the end of the Loblolly Boy. I always thought that I would use this name as the vehicle for my songwriting but I've realized that it cannot be that. It carries too much other baggage with it that I feel has been holding me in stasis. It's time to move on. To let that go. There will come a time when I will start writing songs again (well, hopefully) but it will not be under this moniker. the Loblolly Boy will be a timestamp. A momentary flash in the flame. But now, it all turns to ash.

Thanks, y'all. I hope you enjoy it.
